The Museum of History and Ethnography of the city of Calarasi is located right in the heart of the city, on one of the main streets. The building was built in the 50s, by "Moldsilva". After about 15 years, it became the headquarters of the Culture and Education Directorate for a very short time, and then became the Musical School, with the first graduates of instrumentalists in 1973. In 2008, the City Hall of Calarasi became the owner of the building, based on the court decision, and in 2014, based on the decision of the Town Council, the museum was established here, where the culture and traditions of the locals are preserved. Thus, the museum becomes a cultural-historical center for the locals and for the tourists of the town of Calarasi.
The museum today has a collection of over 11 thousand exhibits, with historical, artistic and cultural value, including: archaeology, ethnography, sculpture, painting, sketches, pieces with memorial value, weapons and armor, numismatics, clothing, musical instruments, objects of religious worship, rare books, photography, philately, technique, furniture and much more.
The museum has nine exhibition halls, each with a distinct theme. The museum's most valuable collection - over two thousand works, donated by the daughter of the sculptor Dumitru Scvorțov-Russu, Mariana Scvorțova, is located in the Dumitru Scvorțov-Russu Exhibition Hall. Over a thousand ethnographic exhibits from the Calarasi district can be found in the Casa Mare Hall, and the Calarasi - Fair Hall (1794-1940), which addresses the history of the locality in the 19th century, with a predominantly Jewish population, offers visitors photos, documents, testimonies, book collections, personal belongings of the Jews who lived in Calarasi, and then emigrated to Palestine, Argentina, Canada, Russia, the United States and others.
In the Archeology section, vestiges from the Cucuteni-Tripoli Civilization period, up to the Middle Ages, can be found. Radios, telephones, furniture, photographs, clothing can be admired in the Soviet Period Hall. Music lovers can admire the musical instruments, which date from the middle of the 19 th century to 20 th century, in the Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall. Numismatics lovers will find in the museum over 1500 coins, from ancient times, and weapons used in various wars, in the Hall of Arms, Armor and Numismatics. Collections of coins, which circulated on the territory of Moldova, but also from all over the world, can be found in this room, because tourists donate banknotes and coins from the country they come from. The Religious Tourism Exhibition Hall offers visitors information and documents about the wooden churches, which date back to the 18 th century, the monasteries of Calarasi from the 18-19 th centuries, icons, priests’ clothing, church flags, religious pieces, etc.
Thus, over the years, the museum has become a center of local culture, and from 2020 - a Tourist Information Center of the Calarasi district. The center is part of a cross-border project "MuseumInfoTur – valorizing and increasing the visibility of cultural and historical heritage, within the cross-border network of museums - Tourist Information Centres", 2SOFT/2.1./129.
