The National Museum of Literature "Mihail Kogalniceanu" (in the beginning, the Republican Museum of Literature of the SSRM) was founded on the initiative of the Writers' Union of Moldova, by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the SSRM, on February 10, 1965. The museum began its activity on 1 April of the same year, under the aegis and in the headquarters of the Writers' Union of the SSRM. In 1983, the Museum was given the name of the writer and scholar-encyclopedist Dimitrie Cantemir. Eight years later (1991), the institution was transformed into the "Mihail Kogalniceanu" National Center for Literary Studies and Museography, and in 1997 - into the "Mihail Kogalniceanu" Museum of Romanian Literature. By Decision no. 981, from December 22, 2012, starting from January 1, 2013, the institution passed from the administration of the Writers' Union of Moldova to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova, under the name "Mihail Kogalniceanu" National Literature Museum. In this context, the institution was recognized as a national museum, which allows it to manage the activity of some branches, such as the "Alexandru Donici" Memorial House, in the village of Donici, Orhei district (1977); the "Constantin Stamati" Memorial House, in the village of Ocnita, Ocnita district (1988) and the "Grigore Vieru" Memorial House, in Pererita village, Briceni district (2015).
