National Museum of Art of Moldova
The National Museum of Art of Moldova, one of the most prestigious museum institutions in Moldova, founded in 1939, is located in the center of Chisinau, in three buildings, important architectural monuments from the end of the 19th century XIX - beginning of the 20th century XX: Hertza House, Kligman House and Dadiani Headquarters. The museum also has in its custody one of the most valuable historical monuments from the 16th century - the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God from Causeni, with a unique painting for the Republic of Moldova, made in 1763.
The Dadiani headquarters, where, in the last decades, the museum keeps a large part of the collections and carries out all its exhibition activities, was built in 1901, according to the project of the architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, at the initiative and with the funds of Princess Natalia Dadiani, as a gymnasium for girls, this operating until World War II.
Later, the building housed various institutions, among them the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the SSRM, the Palace of Pioneers and Students, the last beneficiary being the Museum of the Communist Party of Moldova. In 1989, following its liquidation, the edifice, together with the two annexes, in an advanced state of decay, after the damage caused by the 1986 earthquake, was handed over to the National Museum od Art. Shortly after, after three other consecutive earthquakes in 1990, the central part of the building, with the central entrance from 31 August street, being severely damaged, was closed to the public.
Between 2004 and 2016, a sector of the Dadiani head office was restored, from 31 August 1939 str., no. 115, with an area of 1783 square meters. In November 2016, a part of the museum's permanent exhibitions was inaugurated, in the respective rehabilitated spaces, and in September 2021, another sector of the Dadiani headquarters was rehabilitated and inaugurated, with an area of 1485 square meters.
Currently, the spaces with an area of 3268 square meters are equipped with the most modern and high-performance security systems, preservation and display of cultural values, all of them working at optimal parameters. Thanks to the respective restored block, the National Museum of Art of Moldova has become a real cultural center of national importance, where multiple cultural-educational activities are carried out, addressed to various categories of the public.
The museum's heritage encompasses a wide range of cultural values, 39700 pieces, systematized in collections: ancient art (sculpture, decorative art, numismatics) from the 4th-1st centuries BC - 2nd century AD; late medieval and popular art (consisting mostly of icons, cult objects, old books, textiles, traditional costume); modern and contemporary national art (painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative art, 19th-21st centuries); Russian art (icons, painting, graphics and miniatures); Western European universal art: painting, graphics, sculpture and decorative art (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, 17th-20th centuries); numismatics and medals (Egypt, Greece, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, England, Ireland, Sweden, etc., 16th-20th centuries); oriental art (Japan, China, Tibet, 18th-20th centuries).
